Silver Thomas Hanley is thrilled to announce that the Joondalup Health Campus Mental Health Unit has been shortlisted for Project of the Year International – New Build at the prestigious Design in Mental Health 2025 Awards. These Awards are considered among the most significant in the design and build community for mental healthcare.
The new Mental Health Unit is a purpose-built facility collocating four diverse consumer cohorts on a constrained site, without compromising on critical mental health design principles. The facility showcases a sophisticated design approach, accommodating 102 individual bedrooms.
We had the privilege of collaborating with Ramsay Health Care and the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist in designing this contemporary mental health facility. The unit focuses on the wellbeing of both mental health consumers and their caregivers, featuring dedicated units for Psychiatric Intensive Care, Voluntary Adults, Youth (ages 16-24), and Older Adults (>65).
Key design drivers, such as passive observation, abundant natural light and an efficient, user-friendly layout, were central to our design philosophy. The result is a balanced environment that offers secure, private spaces for each cohort, complemented by shared communal areas and courtyards that promote a sense of unity and ease of use for both consumers and staff. The facility is large yet compact, diverse yet integrated, and secure yet open.
We are proud to be part of such a meaningful project and look forward to seeing the ongoing, positive impact it will have on the community.
